Understanding how the labor market works in Morocco requires a multidisciplinary approach, stressed the executive president of the Policy Center for the New South (PCNS), Karim El Aynaoui, on Friday in Rabat.

Speaking at a seminar jointly organized by the PCNS and the World Bank on the theme “Employment and the functioning of the labor market in Morocco: lessons from recent research for public policies”, Mr. El Aynaoui highlighted the importance of systematically revisiting stylized facts to better understand the functioning of the economy and allow for constructive discussions, particularly with regard to the labor market.

This seminar, he continued, marks the beginning of an ongoing dialogue with regular discussions on these issues, specifying that the PCNS is committed to systematically revisiting the stylized facts of the Moroccan economy to maintain an up-to-date and accurate understanding.

This approach is essential for any economist, in order to have the common analytical frameworks necessary for constructive discussions, particularly on subjects such as employment-growth elasticity, the transmission effect of the exchange rate on inflation and the participation of women in the labor market, he explained.

“This seminar aims to shed light on major issues such as the type of education needed for young people to get a job, the role of labor law and minimum wage on employment, as well as the role of businesses and the relationship between economic growth and job creation,” he said, specifying that these are central issues for the development of the Kingdom.

Mr. Hentschel also welcomed the notable progress experienced by Morocco, considered one of the middle-income countries having recorded one of the most robust growths in the world, thanks to its macroeconomic and political stability, and its sustained economic development.

The seminar was structured around several workshops where researchers presented the conclusions and recommendations of their work, addressing in particular the institutional aspects and governance of the labor market, the growth-employment relationship, the challenges of economic empowerment of women and the education-training-employment nexus.
