The middle school diploma has undergone more than one reform since its creation in 1947. However, the reform carried out by Gabriel Attal, then Minister of National Education, as part of his “knowledge shock” program, gives the national brevet diploma a completely different scope, obtaining it becoming a prerequisite for entering high school from next year.

In this same reform, the current Prime Minister modified the importance of continuous monitoring on the final grade, representing 40% of this grade against 50% currently.

“Give a real requirement”

By revising the terms of its award and transforming its status, Gabriel Attal “wants to give a real requirement to the national brevet diploma”. This involves banning academic corrections, a practice by which a rectorate can raise the averages of all candidates and thus increase the success rate. “We have not seen any in 2023, but we are going to create a regulatory framework banning them”, declared Édouard Geffray, Director General of School Education to the newspaper The world last January.

A drop in the success rate expected

This reform should have a downward effect on the rate of obtaining the brevet, which has been increasing for several years. In 2023, 90.3% of Moselle candidates had obtained their diploma, compared to 84.7% in 2013. A trend that more or less follows that of the success rate at the national level.
