2024 legislative elections in Aude: in the first constituency, Christophe Barthès will face Philippe Poutou in the second round

The outgoing deputy, Christophe Barthès, missed his re-election in the first round by 446 votes. Sunday July 7, he will be opposed to the candidate of the New Popular Front, Philippe Poutou, while the former deputy Jean-Claude Perez narrowly misses third place in a triangular since he does not cross the 12.5% threshold. registered? necessary condition for qualification to the second round.

With a divided left for these partial legislative elections in the 1st constituency of Aude, we inevitably expected that the outgoing deputy, Christophe Barthès, would come out on top.

It is clear that the predictions have come true, perhaps even beyond the hopes of the outgoing parliamentarian who narrowly missed being re-elected in the first round: the results from the last polling stations in Carcassonne caused his score to fall below the 50% he had achieved until then.

With participation clearly increasing (more than 67% compared to 55% in the last European elections and 50.65% in the 2019 legislative elections), if the mobilization of voters was felt on the side of the New Popular Front (NFP), the without label Aurélien Turchetto cornered by a part of the Aude PS, and even the presidential majority, represented by the former deputy Jean-Claude Perez, she was largely favorable to the former departmental head of the National Rally who accumulated 32,916 votes, i.e. more than double its score in the 2022 legislative elections (15,871 votes). The various calls to the polls and the absence of a Republican candidate who withdrew the day after his declaration in the prefecture, certainly played a major role in this tsunami-like result.

Jean-Claude Perez almost invited himself to the second round

Parachuted, the candidate of the New Popular Front, Philippe Poutou, managed to climb with difficulty to second position which qualifies him for the second round, falling behind his opponent by more than 20,000 votes. Jean-Claude Perez could have played, for his part, the third role on July 7 if a few votes had not escaped him to reach 12.5% of those registered, a sine qua non condition for qualifying for the second round.

The mobilization of numerous elected officials from the Socialist Party around Aurélien Turchetto was not enough, with the non-partisan candidate arriving far behind the leading trio, totaling only 12.68% of the votes cast.

It is therefore Carcassonne which tipped the scales this Sunday, June 30, the final polling stations leaving a slight bitterness for Christophe Barthès. It was a few hundred votes short, because Philippe Poutou narrowed his gap and established himself as the second man in this election. In the prefecture, the far-right candidate gathered 6,236 votes, or 42.28%. Far behind him, Philippe Poutou received 3,533 votes, 23.96%. The other surprise, which is not really one, is the score of the former socialist deputy mayor, Jean-Claude Perez. Invested by the outgoing majority, in his stronghold, he accumulated 2,672 votes, 18.12%. For a few moments, as the results arrived, the former parliamentarian elected for 20 years imagined himself in second place.

In fourth position in Carcassonne also, we find Aurélien Turchetto: with 1,832 votes (12.42% of those cast), the one who wanted to embody a left of the territory was unable to seduce the Carcassonne voters.

The other candidates, fluctuated between 211 and 68 votes. In Carcassonne, there were “four blocs” that faced each other. A bit like in all the communes of the first constituency of Aude.

Lézignan gives 54% to Christophe Barthès

Unsurprisingly, Lézignan gave a large preference to the outgoing RN deputy. Christophe Barthès thus collected 54.44% of the votes which represents, in number of votes, a dazzling progression compared to the first round of the previous legislative elections: 2,483 votes against 1,191 in 2022. Here too, the mobilization of right-wing and far-right will have played a full role since participation in two years has increased by almost 20 points (44.47% in 2022, 61.74% this time). There remains the question of the left bloc in a city which, a decade ago, still voted socialist. Divided between socialist support for the non-label Aurélien Turchetto, and those of the New Popular Front, Philippe Poutou, the camp of the two candidates painfully reached 27.17%: a situation that the local leaders of the left parties will have to study with precision… From his On the other hand, the presidential camp continues to lose ground, with Jean-Claude Pérez peaking at 15.50% when Danièle Hérin reached 21.28% in 2022.
