return to the first round in three points, in the Nord and Pas-de-Calais

Triangular, tidal wave National Rally and rout for the presidential majority. The day after the first round of the 2024 legislative elections, we take stock in the departments of Nord and Pas-de-Calais.

The day after the first round of the 2024 legislative elections, the North and Pas-de-Calais are adorned in navy blue. Out of 33 constituencies in the North and Pas-de-Calais, 12 of them elected an RN candidate in the first round. 21 will have to wait for the results of the second round to know their deputy, including 12 triangular ones which could change everything.

The results of the first round in the North and Pas-de-Calais:

If the RN dominates, the party of Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella is followed by the New Popular Front (NFP) in the two departments with 25.89% of the votes cast in the North, and 20.47% in Pas-de-Calais.

Depending on the voting instructions expressed by the different parties for the second round, the transfer of votes could change the trend.

We summarize this first round of elections in three points.

The triangulars at the heart of the second round strategy

The word is on the lips of all political analysts and for good reason, the triangular will play a crucial role in the outcome of the second round of the 2024 legislative elections. In the North and Pas-de-Calais this is no exception.

Traditionally, during legislative elections, when a candidate does not obtain more than 50% of the votes, he is in a tie with the second candidate who obtained the most votes. The two then face each other in the second round. But if a third candidate obtains a number of votes at least equal to 12.5% of those registered in his constituency, then a triangular is formed. That is to say, three candidates are still in the running to win the second round of the election.

In the North and Pas-de-Calais, 12 constituencies are in this scenario. Respectively 10 in the North, and 2 in Pas-de-Calais. In a strategy of blocking against the extreme right, the different parties call for the withdrawal of their candidates according to the scenarios. The transfer of votes to another candidate could allow in some constituencies NFP candidates or those of the presidential majority to win.

Not a single vote should go to the National Rally

Prime Minister and candidate “Together!” in Hauts-de-Seine

Jean-Luc Mélenchon has given a clear instruction: any NFP candidate who comes in third place will have to withdraw his candidacy, where an RN candidate is in the lead. For his part, candidate in Hauts-de-Seine, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal is just as clear “pas one vote must go to the National Rally“, and calls for the withdrawal of Ensemble candidates in the triangular elections.

According to Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s instructions, the NFP should withdraw from the 5th, 6th, 12th, 13th and 21st constituencies of the North. As well as from the 2nd constituency of Pas-de-Calais.

For the other candidates, the announcements of withdrawals are coming in dribs and drabs on this day after the election. Jean-Pierre Pont (ENS) announced his withdrawal in the 5th constituency of Pas-de-Calais, in favour of Olivier Barbarin (NFP), without giving any voting instructions.

National Rally (RN) Tidal Wave

The observation is clear in the constituencies of Pas-de-Calais: the RN candidates gathered the majority of votes in each of them. In the North, if some constituencies remain dominated by the left and the presidential majority, mainly around Lille and its metropolis, the RN dominates.

Unsurprisingly, in her stronghold of Hénin Beaumont, Marine Le Pen received 58.04% of the votes, which ensures her place as deputy in the first round for the 11th constituency of Pas-de-Calais. She is not the only RN candidate to have received more than half of the votes. Sébastien Chenu was also directly elected in the 19th constituency of the North with 58.35% of the votes.

At the National Rally HQ, activists rejoiced at these results. In the euphoria, one of them explained:you know people are fed up, we are no longer safe, we no longer have enough to eat.”

Roussel beaten, Darmanin in the lead… an update on the figures from Nord and Pas-de-Calais

Among the other parties, surprises punctuated the vote. Particularly in the 20th constituency of the North, where Fabien Roussel, national secretary of the Communist Party, has been elected since 2017. He was beaten in the first round by Guillaume Florquin (RN), who won 50.30% of the votes.

But the PC framework does not want to be defeatist,”Everything is still possible” he said in his speech following the results.

In Tourcoing, in the 10th constituency of the North, Gérald Darmanin is ahead of the RN and the NFP and confirms his leadership position in the region with 36.03% of the votes. But the recompositions of the second round and the particularity of the triangulars do not yet ensure his place as deputy.
