The matches between Belgians and French are always special encounters. Especially given the recent history between the two nations.

The duels between the Blues and the Red Devils are particular for the border areas of the two countries, often divided as to the outcome of the match. This evening, these will especially be places closely monitored by the police.

In 2018, excesses were reported on both sides of the border, which authorities on both sides want to avoid.

AFP reports that ten mayors of cross-border municipalities (eight in France, two in Belgium) have taken the decision to close several roads.

Law enforcement mobilized

“Blocking or filtering roadblocks will be organized at the various border crossings, starting at 4 p.m. on Monday. They will only be lifted during the night, if the context allows,” they declare in their joint press release.

In these cities, no mass events will be organized and gatherings are banned. In Belgium, the two municipalities concerned are Comines-Warneton and Wervicq (West Flanders).

The situation is different at Tournai. While it appeared that the French were forbidden to go to the fan zone dressed in their colours, Mayor Paul-Olivier Delannois finally announced to No Tele that he was “betting on intelligence and cordiality” by authorising everyone to display their affiliation.
