Legislative: Gabriel Attal suspends unemployment insurance reform: News

Sunday June 30, after the publication of the results of the first round of the legislative elections, Gabriel Attal announced from Matignon that the unemployment insurance reform is now suspended.

Gabriel Attal suspended the unemployment insurance reform which was to be the subject of a decree from Monday July 1. This reform could “be the subject of adjustments, discussions between republican forces” after the second round of legislative elections on July 7, his entourage indicated, according to comments relayed by L’Express. Matignon also specified that a “joining decree” will be published this Monday morning in order to extend the conditions in force “until July 31st”.

Two hours after the publication of the results of the first round on Sunday, Gabriel Attal spoke from Matignon: “Our objective is clear: to prevent the RN from having an absolute majority in the second round and therefore from governing with its disastrous project.” He adds that “not a single vote should go to the National Rally”. Like the New Popular Front, the Prime Minister explains: “It is our moral duty to do everything to prevent the worst from happening,” therefore calling on the candidates of the presidential majority who came in third place this Sunday to withdraw in the second round.

According to the final results released by the Ministry of the Interior for the first round on Sunday, June 30, the National Rally is in the lead with 33.14% of the vote. The New Popular Front is behind with 27.99% of the vote while Ensemble obtains 20.76%.

What about the other parties?

Sophie Binet, the Secretary General of the CFDT, welcomed the pausing of the reform on Sunday evening: “That’s excellent news”, reports l’Express. And to add: “We must now definitively abandon this unjust and violent reform which threatens to push more than a million workers into poverty.” The New Popular Front wants “repeal immediately” the reform and judged it “cruel”. Jordan Bardella had declared on Sunday June 16 that he “will delete” this reform if he comes to power after the legislative elections, recalls BFMTV. “There are millions of French people who are affected by unemployment (…) I’m a little fed up with people systematically asking for efforts from the same people”he also declared.
