“Rents no longer make sense” in Quebec: Sol Zanetti’s solutions

In an interview on Noovo Info, the Solidarity MP denounced the inaction of the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ) in the social housing file, which would have led to an increase in rental prices in the Capitale-Nationale, according to him.

“It’s very serious, the CAQ let it get to our throats. If we do nothing, we will become enormously poorer collectively,” he said.

In the eyes of the member for Jean-Lesage, the CAQ should have imposed rent control to avoid excessive increases while limiting renovations.

“The way we become poorer in Quebec is by increasing rents. It’s the biggest household expense.”

-Sol Zanetti, MP for Jean-Lesage

Mr. Zanetti suggests increasing the supply of non-market rents – social housing – which would bring “the entire market towards more reasonable prices”.

He deplores the fact that a program to develop social housing in Quebec has been replaced by a program in favor of affordable housing, which, according to him, is a private matter and does not prevent the drastic increase in prices.

“We are putting public money into this, it will not be a good solution and for three years, this program has delivered nothing.”

“We need a vision for off-market housing to develop the rest of the real estate portfolio in Quebec,” he concluded.
