The tightening of subletting conditions was refused by a few tens of thousands of votes. The cities and their many tenants won the no side.
The suspense lasted all afternoon. There will be no tightening of subletting conditions. The object was refused with only 78,000 votes difference (51.6% no).
The majority of large municipalities followed the defenders of tenants, at the origin of the referendum, including in the cantons which accepted the project. A city-country divide has emerged in German-speaking Switzerland, as shown in our results map below.
Up to 80% no in Lausanne
The “no” vote was particularly strong in several cities: 80% in Lausanne, 75% in Bern and Geneva, almost 70% in Fribourg, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Zurich, Neuchâtel and Bienne. More than enough to change the result.
In the end, among the 20 Swiss municipalities with the most voters, only the two Ticino cities, Lugano and Bellinzona, accepted the reform.

However, the vote did not come down to a simple battle between tenants and owners. Several cantons with a high rate of homeowners, such as Jura, Friborg and Solothurn, rejected the project.
