It is a new mark of the rich cultural history of the village. After the inauguration of the artists' crossroads last year, the association Les Amis de Bourron-Marlotte (Seine-et-Marne) inaugurated a new plaque, Thursday, November 14, to pay tribute to eight artists who marked the cultural life of the Pearl of Gâtinais.
Rue Delort, witness to the passage of artists to Bourron-Marlotte
It is part of the cultural trail “Sur les Pas des Artistes”, launched by the association to highlight the local artistic heritage. “Eight artists are mentioned, having lived in four different houses from rue Delort, a place rich in artistic history,” explains Daniel Ricoult, president of the Les Amis de Bourron-Marlotte association.
We find the sculptor there Eugène Cyrille Brunet (1828-1906), the painter Jules The Heart (1832-1882), who invited his friend Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) to discover Marlotte, where he created the famous Auberge de la Mère Antony, now exhibited at the Stockholm Museum.
The plaque also honors the painter and collector Charles Antiq (1824-1894), as well as François Thévenot (1856-1943), known for his portraits and landscapes of the region.
But rue Delort is not limited to its prestigious residents…
“The street has seen luminaries like Renoir, Sisley, and even Cézannehe lists. It also hosted the phalanstery (Group of people living in community and having activities and a common goal, according to Larousse, editor's note) of Armand Point, where artists and intellectuals of the symbolist movement gathered, such as'Oscar Wilde and Stéphane Mallarmé. »
Daniel Ricoult also mentions a local legend: “One of the houses, the Château Joyeux, was even the place of empress Joséphine’s romantic meetings! Legend ? Who knows…”
Enrich the village’s tourist trail
Founded in 1953, the association initiated this plaque project in the 1980s. Since 2003, colorful and illustrated plaques have punctuated the tourist route of Bourron-Marlotte, offering visitors an immersion in the artistic history of the village.
“Our objective is to document and publicize this rich heritage, by creating a real cultural circuit for locals and tourists,” explains Daniel Ricoult. This project is also supported by Crédit Agricole Brie-Picardie de Nemours, sponsor of the plaque inaugurated this year.
The inauguration of this plaque marked a moment of conviviality and memory since it took place in the presence of Josiane Barré, Jean-François Thévenot, Élisabeth Mercier, Marie-Christine Simiand, the four current owners of the houses honored by the plaque, some of whom are descendants of the artists mentioned.
The plaque was designed to last: “It is made by the same craftsman as that of Square Thibaud, installed in 2003, and which has not moved since! », smiles the president. In addition to paying tribute to the great names of Rue Delort, this project aims to strengthen the tourist appeal of Bourron-Marlotte, while offering residents the opportunity to rediscover their local heritage.
