In the department of Isère, a rooster is at the heart of a discord between neighbors. The owners of this gallinaceae were taken to court by a disgruntled local resident. However, according to the owners, the bird was already singing there even before their neighbor arrived. Faced with this situation, the owners initiated an online petition, which received massive support with more than 29,000 signatures collected to date.
Proudly displaying his crest, Ricco, a rooster of about five years old, makes himself heard every day, sometimes even several times. Its owner emphasizes that“he tells us the time in the morning”. However, a neighbor complains that Ricco's singing is excessive. After an unsuccessful attempt at mediation at the town hall, she decided to take the matter to court. To reduce potential nuisance, the couple living in Isère installed a device on the henhouse to control the movements of their animals.
“This type of situation is common in the countryside”says the owner. However, the neighbor maintains, as part of the ongoing legal proceedings, that the location is not a true rural area. It evokes the presence of national roads, highways as well as the density of buildings. According to her, the neighborhood is rather urbanized, although France Télévisions journalists were unable to establish contact with her.
Since 2021, legislation aims to protect the sensory heritage of rural areas, but the term “countryside” is not clearly defined legally. On the web, a petition in favor of Ricco has collected more than 29,000 signatures.
