The horns never stop ringing around the Fourchette roundabout in Bressuire. “It’s nice, people congratulate us! » Friday November 22, 2024, the Confédération paysanne des Deux-Sèvres, led by Benoît Jaunet, spokesperson for the union, opted for a more consensual method than the two other agricultural unions.
From 11:30 a.m., around forty union members as well as non-unionized people took possession of the Bressuirais roundabout to organize a giant barbecue with orders not to block traffic. A way to distinguish itself from the more aggressive actions carried out by the FNSEA and the Rural Coordination at the start of the week.
However, behind this good-natured mobilization, the demonstrators also want to show their opposition to Mercosur and other free trade agreements.
Income as the heart of the battle
According to Benoît Jaunet, “no free trade agreement is good for farmers. It may be interesting for sectors but not for farmers. Our fight is income.”
The Peasant Confederation has already been advocating for several years the establishment of a guaranteed minimum price aimed at ensuring a decent income for farmers by guaranteeing them a minimum price for their products. This price must in particular cover the remuneration of farmers, the costs linked to agricultural production as well as social contributions. “In the spring, Emmanuel Macron said he was going to look into the issue, today there is nothing”rails the spokesperson.
