This Saturday, June 29, 2024, a fire broke out in a residence located in the Réserve district. The fire started in a stroller on the first floor, on the landing of an apartment. More than thirty people were evacuated from the residence. Two women were transported to the CHU Nord. An investigation has been opened (Photos: ma.m/www.imazpress.com)

Anne-Lise lives on the landing where the fire took place. Absent at the time of the disaster, it was a text message that informed her.

“I was at mass for my grandson’s confirmation and there I received a message telling me there was a fire.”

Arriving on site – fortunately, thanks to the rapid intervention of the firefighters – his accommodation was not affected.

“It’s unacceptable that the fire should start like this. Thank you, my home wasn’t burned down.” She now lives in fear. “Tonight, I definitely can’t sleep here. There’s no more water, no more electricity, and above all, we’re not safe.”

But what she deplores is that this is not the first time that this has happened. “We need a camera, secure the entrance to the building because everyone is afraid there,” she says.

Florence also lives in this building. “We took the children and then we confined ourselves,” she explains. “There were babies, asthmatics.”

What the resident deplores is that “it is not the first time. We hope for a closed gate, more security.”

– More than twenty people evacuated –

It was at 9 a.m. that the firefighters were called. “When we arrived, it was less serious, the fire had started in the technical shaft and the electrical panel,” explains Captain Thibault.

On site quickly, “a team put in place the necessary means to extinguish the fire and carry out reconnaissance”. “Fortunately, no apartments were impacted.”

“When we arrived, 20 people were outside, on the third floor, seven people were confined in an open-air apartment and four people were on the ground floor,” he said. “Two people, two women, were evacuated to the CHU Nord.”

The Sdis which deployed an ambulance, a firefighter nurse, the large ladder, and fire extinguishing means.

– Will the families be rehoused? –

On site this morning, Arielle Rezac, elected to the town hall of Sainte-Marie. “The town hall is waiting for news from the Sidr to see if the families will be rehoused and if they will take care of opening the doors like the firefighters were obliged to break down the doors.”

The town hall will help families by providing them with water packs “and then we’ll see this evening”.

When contacted, Sidr did not respond to our requests.
