Late in the afternoon, the police were still struggling to understand how the driver of a semi-trailer was able to veer out of his lane and collide with a first vehicle coming in the opposite direction, then a second.

While the first collision was relatively minor, the second impact was of unprecedented violence.

The force of the impact caused the car to crash into the lorry, which in turn overturned onto its side.

Both vehicles then caught fire and were completely burnt out by the intensity of the blaze.

A fourth vehicle was slightly damaged in this series of collisions.

According to our information, at least three people died in the tragedy. At the end of the afternoon, the charred bodies had not yet been formally identified and it was therefore impossible to know their age and sex.

At least four other people were also injured, including a pregnant woman, her partner and their young child. However, their lives would not be threatened.

A portion of Route 335 was completely closed to southbound traffic to allow police officers to do their work.
