It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Brian T. Newbold on June 22, 2024 at the age of ninety-two. He passed away peacefully at his residence in Faubourg du Mascaret in the presence of his son and daughter. Brian was born on June 21, 1932 in Manchester, United Kingdom. The son of John Stanley and Florence (Wray) Newbold, he married the love of his life, Marie Cécile Evelyn (Ti-Lou) LaRoche (2022) in 1958. They were married for 64 years.
He received an honors degree in science from the University of Manchester in 1953. He graduated from Laval University, Quebec, with a DSc (with high distinction) in chemistry (1957). After a postdoctoral fellowship in 1958, he led a 45-year career in teaching, research, and administration at Saint-Joseph University, where he was associate professor and founding director of the chemistry department (1961). , and at the University of Moncton, where he was associate professor and founding director of the chemistry department (1963), a position he held at the same time as vice-dean of the Faculty of Sciences until 1969 In 1979, he accepted the position of assistant rector at the Moncton campus and, a year later, that of executive vice-rector of the University of Moncton, both of which ended in 1985. In addition to teaching. biochemistry at Mount Allison University, he has been a visiting professor at five universities in Canada, France, Brazil, and Japan, and holds numerous honors including: founding member of the National Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada , professor emeritus of chemistry, University of Moncton (1999), Knight of the Order of Academic Palms of France. Dr. Brian Newbold is the author of three books and more than 150 research publications. He was also Commander of the Order of Saint-Lazare – Acadie-Atlantique Canada (1992-98) and was also decorated with the Officer of Merit medal. He will be missed by his two loving children, Linda Di Penta and Trevor Newbold (Lisa Gagnon), as well as many nieces and nephews. Most importantly, her four grandsons, Maxime Newbold, Alessandro Di Penta, Matteo Di Penta and Zacharie Newbold, were her precious loves.
A funeral liturgy will be held on Monday, July 15, 2024 at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (506 858-1995). A reception will follow in the reception room of the funeral home. Burial will be in Fair Haven Memorial Gardens.
