The Kaolack region, located in the heart of the peanut basin, will be the center of national consultations on water and sanitation from November 21 to 23, 2024, according to an announcement from the Minister of Hydraulics and Sanitation, Cheikh Tidiane Dièye. This strategic event will bring together the main players in the sector to “co-build a new national policy” in these essential areas. These meetings aim to develop sustainable and inclusive solutions to improve access to drinking water and sanitation throughout the country.
The selection of Kaolack to host these consultations demonstrates the government’s commitment to territorial equity and social justice. By choosing this region, the government underlines its desire to guarantee equitable distribution of water resources and sanitation services, without geographical or social distinction. The three-day meeting will focus on the idea of an equitable and sovereign Senegal, where all citizens, whether urban or rural, have equal access to vital services.
The consultations aim to move the country towards ambitions aligned with Vision Senegal 2050, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030, as well as the African Water Vision 2063. Among the main expectations of these consultations includes the development of a Sectoral Development Policy Letter (LPSD), a strategic document intended to guide the development of infrastructure and meet the needs of the populations.
The Ministry of Water and Sanitation emphasizes the adoption of an inclusive approach, based on principles of ethics, transparency and inclusion. The objective is to develop public policies that benefit the entire population, by involving local communities in the management of their water resources. These consultations demonstrate the State’s desire to promote collective and sustainable ownership of public policies, aimed at improving the well-being of citizens and supporting national development.
Thus, these consultations are not only a moment of dialogue between stakeholders in the sector, but also an important step towards the development of a water and sanitation policy that is fair, sustainable and capable of responding to the needs. future challenges of the country.
