Is it still possible to bring something new to a novel that has already been adapted a hundred times for cinema and series, and not always for the better? The answer is yes! Certainly, the story is known: the Marquise de Merteuil and the Viscount de Valmont, once lovers, became accomplices in a Machiavellian game. These devious puppeteers manipulate innocent women to demonstrate to others their superiority in terms of feelings and seduction. Their prey? The ingénue Cécile de Volanges and the rebellious widow Madame de Tourvel. From the epistolary masterpiece of Choderlos de Laclos, the director Arnaud Denis has kept all the salt, to which he has added here and there a few elements and salient traits of humor. He draws out amazing theatrical material for the main quartet of actors. Delphine Depardieu (Merteuil) and Valentin de Carbonnières (Valmont) are fantastic masters of ceremonies. Candelabra and candles, painted canvases, here a dressing table, there a shepherdess, and Beethoven's “Symphony No. 7”, which opens and closes hostilities, no doubt, we are heading towards disaster. And the spectators, witnesses to this skillfully orchestrated theater of cruelty, experience fierce jubilation.
“Dangerous Liaisons”, after Choderlos de Laclos, at the Comédie des Champs-Élysées Paris 8e. Until December 31. More information here.
