No more rails, no sleepers and even less ballast. Near Pontivy station (Morbihan), the railway now resembles a hiking trail. At least, for a few weeks…
The platform redone
Since the end of October, the Auray-Pontivy freight line has been under construction over 1.3 km, from Pontivy station towards the north.
This involves renewing the railway platform and carrying out hydraulic and sanitation work so that freight traffic can continue in complete safety.
The work is being carried out by the companies ETF and Olichon for an amount of 1.9 million euros, financed by the State and the Brittany Region.
Maintain and develop freight
Because this part of the line, between Pontivy and Saint-Gérand, was the most degraded, it was rebuilt in advance.
“This work is a prerequisite for the work which will take place in 2026-2027 as part of the State Region Plan Contract (2023-2027)”.
The State Region plan contract plans to renew the freight capillary lines in Brittany (Auray-Pontivy and Vitré Gérard), for a total amount of 40.3 million euros.
The objective is to maintain and develop rail freight in Brittany in line with the national freight strategy.
Freight and tourism
The Auray-Pontivy-Saint-Gérand line is used all year round by the freight company Millet Rail for two clients: Sanders and the Le Gouessant cooperative.
In summer and for the end-of-year holidays, this line is used by the Napoléon Express tourist train of the Chemins de fer du Center-Bretagne association.
Work on this Pontivy part should be completed in early December 2024.
