OTHER DAYS OF STRIKE FOR QUEBEC’S BLUE COLLAR WORKERS
June 28, 2024
After three days of strike action last week, Quebec City blue-collar workers (CUPE 1638) have announced six new days of strike action, from July 10 to 15, but only if necessary. The union also announced that it hopes to reach a settlement with the employer during a planned negotiation blitz to try to resolve certain impasses.
“This new strike would begin on July 10 at 3 a.m., during the last days of the Quebec Summer Festivals. However, it is possible to cancel if we manage to make significant progress during the blitz which will be held for a few days before July 10,” explains the president of CUPE 1638, Luc Boissonneault.
The union recalls that there are important issues resolved during these talks in terms of work-life balance. In addition, the union is trying to resolve a significant salary delay for its members. For example, certain manual employees in the City of Quebec are behind by $5 per hour when compared with similar positions in the City of Lévis.
Remember that in March, members of the Union of Manual Employees of the City of Quebec (CUPE 1638) voted 98% to initiate pressure tactics which could go as far as a strike. In addition, employees voted for a special contribution to finance their mobilization.
