The winter viability of departmental roads is a mission undertaken by the Yvelines-Hauts-de-Seine Interdepartmental Public Establishment (EPI 78/92). The procedures, human and technical resources implemented by the two departments to facilitate and secure user travel are defined in a winter viability plan which has been activated since November 15.
Numerous actions implemented to optimize everyone’s safety
Concretely until March 17, 2025 at midnight, 160 road agents are likely to intervene. Daily weather monitoring and monitoring of the road network as soon as temperatures drop are carried out. In the event of snowy or icy precipitation, they intervene to scrape and salt the traffic lanes. 40 agents are placed on call, ready to intervene 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
32 salt spreaders equipped with snow removal blades and 4,000 tonnes of salt are made available to them. If necessary, salt replenishments are made during the winter.
A suitable organization
Given the particularity of road traffic in Hauts-de-Seine and more broadly in Île-de-France (dense traffic, unique in France, and sensitive to climatic hazards), the winter viability plan is based on a precise organization . In fact, all departmental roads cannot be treated at the same time. The Department intervenes on strategic departmental roads (RD) and the roadway of engineering structures (bridges, footbridges, etc.), the RDs have been classified into three categories to better manage priorities:
- level 1: the main connections;
- level 2: important routes;
- level 3: other departmental roads.
Other players are involved in the region's road network. The Ile-de-France roads department ensures the processing of national roads and motorways and the municipalities process part of the departmental network located on their territory and the municipal network. Finally, volunteer farmers are involved in scraping and clearing snowdrifts.
