More than 50,000 people will march against transphobia on the eve of the legislative elections

A highly symbolic event on the eve of the first round of the early legislative elections for which the National Rally is the favorite. On Saturday, several tens of thousands of people are expected at the Parisian LGBTQIA+ pride march, which this year will have the fight against transphobia as its slogan.

The march “promises to be mobilizing given the context,” believes James Leperlier, president of Inter-LGBT, which brings together around sixty associations.

Between 50,000 and 80,000 participants expected

The procession will set off from Porte de la Villette at 1:30 p.m. to reach Place de la République where a concert is planned from 4:30 p.m., with headliners Eddy de Pretto, Bilal Hassani, Desire, Louïz and even drag Queen Piche.

According to a police source, the authorities expect between 50,000 and 80,000 participants.

“The transphobic offensive has invaded public debate”

The 2024 edition of the march will be placed under the sign of the fight against “transphobia which, as we have seen, has been commonplace for several weeks and which demands transsolidarity in return”, indicates James Leperlier.

“The transphobic offensive has invaded public debate, anti-trans publications have multiplied, sometimes without the slightest reaction from the authorities,” he added. “The Senate, for its part, voted for a text which is profoundly criminal for us,” he denounced, in reference to a bill aimed at regulating gender transitions before the age of 18 and adopted at the end of May by the upper house. .

According to the Ministry of the Interior, attacks against LGBTQIA+ people increased by 13% in 2023 in France compared to 2022, with even a jump of 19% for crimes and offenses recorded by the police and the gendarmerie.

A “worrying” level of violence and discrimination

The SOS Homophobie association indicated, in a report published in May, that it had recorded a “worrying” level of violence and discrimination suffered by LGBTQIA+ people in 2023.

“This is just the tip of the iceberg, the list of victims of ambushes and transphobia is only getting longer: in 2024 we are still the target of hate speech and acts of violence,” according to James Leperlier.

Emmanuel Macron pinned

“And these hate speeches are used for electoral purposes,” he denounces, targeting the recent remarks of the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, judging the left’s proposal concerning, according to him, a “ change of sex, free, in town hall”.

A few days before the first round of the legislative elections, the Inter-LGBT calls for voting “against the extreme right” and for “parties which put our rights and our demands among their priorities”.
