ANIMALS – They have been attracting onlookers for two days. Three dolphins ran aground in the port of La Rochelle, and attempts to get them back to sea have so far failed, several media outlets including France Bleu reported this Thursday, May 27.

The three young dolphins arrived Tuesday evening during the rising tide, probably to look for food. Since then, they have attracted crowds of curious people. Numerous images from media or premises are circulating on social networks as you can see below.

Specialists from the marine mammal centre (Pélagis) tried to get juvenile dolphins (under five years old) out of the Old Port. “We used steel bars to make an unpleasant sound to show them that this is not the way to go. We almost believed it, they went in the opposite direction to us by trying to go under the footbridge and then they turned around and went back to the bottom of the pool,” explained in particular to France Bleu Cécile Dars, stranding specialist.

” There is no emergency “

Nothing worked, and for the moment operations are on hold. “We don’t want to push them too hard or stress them out,” said Céline Dars, who points out that these animals are “cardiac”. They will resume at the end of the weekend, so that the dolphins can return to their natural environment, unless the three animals manage to get out on their own. In any case, assures the specialist, ” there is no emergency ” because they are healthy.

“There is no major risk for them, apart from the fact that it is a transit zone exposed to pollution. But here, in the Chalutiers basin, it is not a dry port at low tide. They will always have water with a depth of 6 m”specified to West France Fabien Demaret, assistant engineer at the Pélagis center.

These three cetaceans are not the only ones to have come very close to the French coast this year, to the point of finding themselves trapped. According to Pelagis, nine dolphins were seen in the port of Pornic, one in Quiberon, and eight in Oléron. All are now safe and sound.
