Dakar, June 27 (APS) – The Sub-Saharan Africa office of Reporters Without Borders (RSF) called on Thursday on the authorities of the Republic of Guinea to put an end “as a matter of urgency” to media censorship and to “break with a policy of all-out repression.”

”We show our support for our colleagues and the media whose licenses have been withdrawn in total disregard of the law. The Guinean authorities must be held accountable for their actions and for their broken promises on respecting press freedom,” declared Sadibou Marong, director of the Bureau.

RSF organised a rally a few streets from the Guinean embassy in Dakar after a gathering to support the Guinean press was banned, according to Sadibou Marong.

“Through this mobilization action from Dakar, where the situation of the Guinean media worries all stakeholders, we wanted to remind the Guinean Minister of Information and Communication, (…), that RSF will not give up,” he said.

For him, ”It is unacceptable that six media outlets are censored, that nearly 1,000 professionals find themselves out of work overnight and that the public is deprived of its right to plural information.”

The general director of EspaceFM of Guinea, Mohamed Mara, representatives of organizations defending press freedom, including ”Article 19”, the Coordination of Press Associations, the Convention of Young Reporters of Senegal and a Fifteen journalists took part in this gathering which made it possible to denounce, “the censorship actions undertaken by the Guinean government against the media Djoma TV, Djoma FM, Espace FM, Espace TV, Sweet FM and FIM FM”.
