where and when to swim this summer 2024?

As summer begins, we are already anticipating persistent heatwaves in Lyon and the need to cool off at the swimming pool. While waiting for the holidays – or the fall – those who cannot leave the city will be able to visit the seven swimming pools open to the public in Lyon intramural.

Like last year, faced with the influx of swimmers, some indoor municipal swimming pools (except the Rhône swimming pool, which is open all year round), usually closed in the summer, are open instead of the temporary pools of Gerland and Tête d’Or. In addition to the Saint-Exupéry and Tronchet swimming pools, which opened in the summer of 2023, the Garibaldi swimming pool will be added for this summer of 2024. So, the Vaise swimming pool will be closed until the summer of 2025 for renovations. Like last year, due to a lack of lifeguards, these summer pools will open and close at different times. But only in the morning. Because, as we all know, it is hotter in the morning than in the afternoon.

Rue89Lyon provides you with all the practical information.

LOU Piscine (formerly Gerland swimming pool – Lyon 7th)

The big news for this summer of 2024 is the reopening of the Gerland swimming pool (Lyon 7th) renamed “LOU swimming pool” by GL Envents. It was feared that once privatized, the Gerland swimming pool would no longer be accessible to the general public. Which would have constituted a double loss: for heritage (the swimming pool built like the stadium by Tony Garnier is classified under the diving board and the stands) and for sport (in a context of shortage of swimming pools in Lyon).

GL Events (majority shareholder of LOU Rugby) has agreed, in exchange for subsidies from the City of Lyon, to entrust the management of general public slots to the UCPA. The time slots are wide and the prices relatively moderate. The “LOU swimming pool” will be more expensive than a classic City of Lyon swimming pool but less expensive than the Rhône swimming pool in summer configuration. Its outdoor pool will be open all year round.

  • Swimming pool open from June 29
  • A 50-meter outdoor pool, a diving board and a 25-meter indoor pool (new related to the renovation).
  • Monday to Friday, 9am to 9pm; weekends (Saturday and Sunday) 9am to 6pm.
  • Entrance price: 6.50 euros (full price); 5 euros (youth rate – under 18 years old/students); 3 euros (unemployed rate / RSA); 3 euros (disabled and accompanying persons rate); free for children under 3 years old.

➡️ To get there in TCL : metro B, bus 60 (Station de Gerland stop).

Saint-Exupéry swimming pool (Lyon 4th)

Usually closed in the summer, the Saint-Exupéry swimming pool (Lyon 4th) is open this summer like last year. With climate change, the exception becomes the rule. But unlike last year when the pool was open in the afternoon, you can only swim in the morning until 2 p.m.

  • Swimming pool open from July 2 to August 30, 2024
  • A unique 25 meter pool
  • Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. (closed on weekends)
  • Entrance price: 3.40 euros (full price); 2.60 euros (reduced rate); card of 10 entries at 25 euros; free for children under 6 years old (prices have not changed from last year)

➡️ To get there in TCL : metro C (Hénon stop). Bus C18 and 2 (Place Flammarion stop).

Tronchet swimming pool (Lyon 6th)

Like last year, the Tronchet swimming pool (Lyon 6th) is one of the municipal winter swimming pools open in summer. Like Saint-Exupéry, it has a single 25-meter pool. Unlike it, the Tronchet swimming pool will not be accessible all summer (it was the opposite in 2023), until September 1st. With slightly more restricted slots than Saint-Exupéry, namely Monday to Friday afternoon, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. (evacuation of the pool at 4:30 p.m.). It will remain open on public holidays, notably August 15.

  • Swimming pool open from July 2 to August 2, 2024
  • Single 25 meter pool
  • Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. (closed on weekends)
  • Entrance fee: 3.40 euros (full price); 2.60 euros (reduced price); 10-entry card for 25 euros; free for children under 6

➡️ To get there in TCL : metros A, B, trams T1 and T4 (Charpennes stop). Bus 27 (Clinique du Parc stop); C1 and C6 (Vitton-Belges stop).

Garibaldi Pools (Lyon 3e)

After a year and a half of work (including asbestos removal), the Garibaldi swimming pool (Lyon 3rd) reopened this spring. Usually closed during the summer, it will be open this summer 2024. With a renovation bill of 1.5 million euros, it would be nice to take advantage of it.

  • Swimming pool open from June 24 to August 30, 2024
  • Single pool of 33.25 meters
  • Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. (closed on weekends)
  • Entrance price: 3.40 euros (full price); 2.60 euros (reduced rate); card of 10 entries at 25 euros; free for children under 6 years old

➡️ To go there in TCL : metro B, trams T1 and T3 (Part-Dieu). Bus: C25 (Garibaldi-Gambetta stop).

Tony Bertrand Nautical Center (Lyon 7th)

We no longer present it. The Tony Bertrand Nautical Center (Lyon 7th), still often called the “Rhône swimming pool”, welcomes a large influx of swimmers every summer. Originally, it was designed by Lyon architect Alexandre Audouze-Tabourin on the occasion of Lyon’s candidacy for the 1968 Summer Olympics. The Nautical Center was then renovated between 2012 and 2015. As under the era Gérard Collomb, the Tony Bertrand Nautical Center is still the most expensive public swimming pool in Lyon.

  • Swimming pool open in summer configuration until September 1st
  • A 50-metre Olympic pool and a 68-metre pool with summer leisure facilities
  • Accessible to people with disabilities.
  • Every day from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., except Monday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Exceptional openings Monday July 1st and Thursday August 1st from 3:30 p.m. (same hours as last year)
  • Entrance fee: 8 euros (full price); 5.50 euros (reduced price); free for children under 6. Please note that the 10-entry card is not accepted during the summer.

➡️ To get there in TCL : metro D (Guillotière stop); tram T1 (Saint-André stop). Bus 35 (Nautical Center stop).

La Duchère swimming pool (Lyon 9th)

Along with the Rhône swimming pool, the Duchère swimming pool (Lyon 9th) is one of the largest swimming pools in Lyon. Like the Tony Bertrand Nautical Center, the swimming pool at the Duchère hill is accessible to people with disabilities.

As with the Mermoz swimming pool, it will open under the same conditions as last year. Please note: 2 exceptional closures on July 1 and August 1 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. (on these days, the swimming pool will open from 3:30 p.m.).

  • Swimming pool open from June 24 to September 1
  • An educational pool, a 50 meter pool, a paddling pool and 2 diving boards of 3 and 5 meters high.
  • Every day, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. then from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., except Friday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. (same times as last year).
  • Entrance price: 3.40 euros (full price); 2.60 euros (reduced rate); card of 10 entries at 25 euros; free for children under 6 years old.

➡️ To get there in TCL : buses C6, C14 and 66 (Duchère Piscine stop).

Jean Mermoz swimming pool (Lyon 8th)

Like every year, the Jean Mermoz swimming pool (Lyon 8th) will welcome young and old all summer long. Same hours, same prices, same shift (pools evacuated at 3 p.m.), everything will happen under the same conditions as last year.

  • Swimming pool open from June 28 to August 30
  • A 25-meter pool, a fun pool and a paddling pool
  • Every day, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. then from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., except Tuesday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. (same hours as last year)
