Certainly, Temu, Shein and Vinted are entering the annual ranking of distributors that LSA has just published. But this should not mask the hegemonic weight of large food stores. As shown in the table below, one brand in four belongs to the food sector. In the top 10, they continue to take the lion’s share with eight brands out of ten. By the way, almost twenty years ago, the top ten places were occupied exclusively by large food stores. The names of the brands have barely changed: E.Leclerc, Carrefour, Intermarché, Auchan, Super U, Casino, Cora already shared the first ten places on the podium.

Two thirds of the value of the Top 100

With 256 billion euros out of a total of 390 generated by the Top 100, food distribution occupies a special place. And in fifteen years, E.Leclerc has more than doubled its turnover, from 27.3 to more than 60 billion euros. In 2023, reported in absolute value, the growth of the champion in all categories (4.1 billion euros) corresponds to Cora’s turnover alone.

As for Intermarché’s gains, this would allow it to place itself between Fnac and But, at 32e place in the Top 100. Those who suffer are called Casino, Auchan and Cora. For example, the Casino supermarkets lost 5 places, the Géant hypermarkets 7. Monoprix and Franprix, still in the Casino fold, are not better off (two places lost for the first, the same for Franprix). The year 2024 will be a test for the latter.
