It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Jack Timmer; husband of Lil, father of Carl; and grandfather of Bret and Ben (Kori) Timmer. brother Ron (Marg Timmer); Sister Doreen (Robert Rempel); Sister Carol Wegren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Jan and Eva; brother Glen (Evelena) Timmer; and brother-in-law Larry Wegren.
Jack was born in New Westminster, British Columbia on February 23, 1948. About two years later, his family moved to Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan. He lived in Meadow Lake until 1965 when, at the age of 17, he decided to move to Mission BC where his sister Doreen and her family resided.
In May 1968, Jack married his love, Lil, and they began their life together, welcoming their son Carl in 1970. Jack was truly a “jack of all trades” and he supported his new family by driving for Co- op Oil; working in the cedar mills of the Fraser Valley; in a shake packaging factory; and as an employee on a dairy farm.
In 1974, he moved his small family to Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, with the idea of becoming a farmer. Instead, he began working at the Meadow Lake sawmill until it closed due to a strike. He tried his hand at the Department of Highways as a flagman, but found the job not active enough. He learned how to install flooring and the family moved once again to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, then to Birch Hills, Saskatchewan, where land was very affordable, and he began building their first home .
Jack’s “jack of all trades” nature persisted, and over the years he worked in construction; did upholstery, was a guard at the college. He started his own business called RenoJax Contracting, when he obtained opportunities with the RCMP to become a general contractor for barrack upgrades in many northern communities.
Throughout his career, he found time to build 5 houses; and renovated many others for the family. Lil knew that when the baseboards were up, it would be time to start packing.
Jack devoted his free time to Mennonite Disaster Services, where his multitude of skills were used to help those suffering hardships caused by floods, hurricanes and tornadoes. He loved his time with this organization which took him twice to St. Thomas, Idaho, Alabama, North Carolina and Florida.
In 2013, after a battle with cancer, he decided that if he couldn’t work like before, it was time to get away from the mosquitoes and the cold. Within three months he had a plan and the house was built at Gallagher Lake Park in Oliver, British Columbia. It became his home in September 2015. Once settled, he began his retirement job with BC Housing in Penticton.
He had a servant’s heart, lived his faith and was able to spend Father’s Day with his Heavenly Father.
Donations are gratefully accepted for the Oliver Food Bank.
A memorial service will be held for Jack at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2024 at Oliver Alliance Church, followed by a reception.
