The outcome could have been much more dramatic given the extent of the damage. But it was with slight burns to the lower limbs that a 66-year-old man finally escaped, who was in his house when a fire broke out on Monday November 18, 2024.
The origin of the fire is currently unknown, but it broke out shortly after 1 p.m. in this one-story house located on rue de l'Ancien Sawmill, in the town of Brûlain. The rapid intervention of firefighters from Brûlain, Niort and the General Staff allowed the fire to be brought under control, but also prevented its spread to the two adjoining houses, on each side of the dwelling concerned.
“A long-term job that awaits us”
Its owner was evacuated by firefighters to the Niort hospital center. The house is completely destroyed within its walls. “It is now a long-term job that awaits us, with operations to strip the roof to facilitate reconnaissance of the framework”, indicates Lieutenant Mikaël Monchaux, commander of relief operations.
A team from Gérédis intervened to cut the power supplying the resident and isolate him from neighboring houses. The gendarmerie, the mayor of Brûlain and his deputy were present on the scene.
