Bordeaux is among the least pedestrianized cities in France, according to a new study

Bad weather to visit Bordeaux on foot

As the summer holidays and the Olympics approach, there will be millions of tourists in France in the coming months. But which French cities are the least easy for tourists to explore on foot? A new studyled by the language learning platform, Preplyanalyzed the walking distance between the five most popular tourist attractions in each French cityusing data from Tripadvisor and Google Maps, to identify the least pedestrian cities.

The study reveals that Bordeaux is one of the least accessible French cities on foot, Or it is necessary at least 3 hours of walking to discover the key tourist sites in one day. It is necessary to count 13 km and nearly 18,000 steps to visit the must-sees. With its figures dragging it down, Bordeaux climbs into the inglorious top 5 just behind Clermond-Ferrand.

The podium is occupied by Marseille, Aix-en-Provence and Montpellier. Conversely, the five cities the study found to be the most walkable are Dijon, Nîmes, Rennes, Nantes and Grenoble which won the congratulations of the jury (or the tourists)!

Methodology

To choose the list of cities to analyze, we looked at the largest population centers in France. In total, 25 cities were analyzed. From the list of cities, we used TripAdvisor to find the top five tourist attractions in each city, based on visitor reviews. For each city, each of the attractions was analyzed on the Google Maps route planner to find the quickest walking route to visit all five attractions. Distances and walking time were then recorded. To estimate the number of steps taken, we used a conversion rate of 1,315 steps per kilometer, based on an average step length of 76 cm“.
