The RCMP reportedly foiled an Iranian assassination attempt targeting former Justice Minister Irwin Cotler.
This is what reports the Globe and Mail Monday, citing a source that the RCMP informed Mr. Cotler on October 26 that he faced “imminent danger of assassination within the next 48 hours from Iran.”
Two suspects have been identified in connection with this threat.
Still according to this same source cited by the national media, the federal agency informed the ex-politician last Thursday that the risk would now be much lower, but the fate of the two suspects remains unknown.
Mr. Cotler had been identified as a potential target by the RCMP, following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, and benefited from special protection from the federal agency giving him access in particular to vehicles with safety glass. -ball and security agents.
Now 84 years old, Irwin Cotler was an MP for the riding of Mount Royal for 16 years and was Minister of Justice in the government of Paul Martin.
He is known in particular for being an ardent defender of human rights.
Mr. Cotler also served as Canada’s special envoy for preserving the memory of the Holocaust and combating anti-Semitism from 2020 to 2023.
