The extension of Sens hospital inaugurated

The Michel-Russin site, a 12,000 m2 extension of the Sens hospital center, was inaugurated this Tuesday, June 25. It brings together several services, including emergencies.

A blazing sun for a memorable day. The Michel-Russin site, an extension of the Gaston-Ramon hospital center, was inaugurated this Tuesday, June 25, less than two months after its commissioning. The inaugural plaque was unveiled by the widow of Dr Michel Russin, anesthetist and resuscitator, who died in 2021, in the presence of many personalities and guests.

More welcoming

The new building brings together the woman-mother-child center (maternity, neonatology, pediatrics, gynecology), the oncology day hospital and hemodialysis. The premises, spacious and bright, offer a more welcoming setting for patients and an optimized working environment for caregivers.

In the maternity ward, beds for the co-parent are integrated into the rooms, all of which are individual. A nature room allows future mothers to have a soothing and intimate environment to prepare for childbirth. In pediatrics, a family lounge is equipped with a kitchen. Hemodialysis has its own entrance and dedicated parking, facilitating access for patients and paramedics. The service has increased its reception capacity to meet growing needs. It can accommodate 18 patients at the same time, compared to 15 in the old premises. The day hospital also has its own entrance and a greater capacity: 16 places compared to 12 in the old premises.

The site also includes adult, pediatric and gynecological emergencies, covering almost 2,000 m2. They benefit from dedicated parking, more rooms and boxes than before. Only maternity emergencies are accommodated in the birth sector of the new building.

The work was launched in 2019, under the aegis of Jean-Dominique Marquier, director of the hospital center until 2023, and Marie-Louise Fort, late mayor of Sens. The building was received last February. The services moved there gradually, until April. Despite “the complicated period of the health crisis. Eiffage construction met deadlines. Everything went very well,” underlined Véronique Robin, director of the hospital center.

Around twenty jobs were created to bring the new building into service. “We still need to consolidate the medical teams and build links with our external partners”, in particular with the CPTS (territorial professional health community) of the north of Yonne, the Auxerre hospital center, but also the Dijon University Hospital “to improve our medical response”. Another perspective: “renovate the old services of the Gaston-Ramon building, on hotel and technical aspects, and offer new services.”

Meaning future first city of Yonne?

“The creation of the mother and child center goes well beyond the transfer of maternity and pediatric services, underlined Paul-Antoine De Carville, mayor of Sens. It offers new services, new support. The Grand Sénonais is the one of the few areas in the Region with demographic growth. This requires that we resize our facilities, such as the hospital, to meet the needs of a city which, tomorrow, will have 30,000 inhabitants and which, the day after tomorrow, could well become. the first town in the department.”

Paul-Antoine De Carville paid tribute to “three figures who were essential for the development of the hospital center”: Marie-Louise Fort, Michel Russin and André Chaussat, mayor of Sens from 1979 to 1983, who was able, finally, to unveil an inaugural Gaston-Ramon plaque.

The Sens maternity hospital has been awarded the Maternys label by the National College of Gynecologists and Obstetricians. This label is based on a set of 12 recommendations for good treatment.
