A 36-year-old man was sentenced to 25 years of criminal imprisonment on Tuesday in Besançon for having “put to death” his partner, the victim of 18 stab wounds, in a surge of violence in 2022.

The Doubs Assize Court found Jamal Hara guilty of both murder of a spouse and habitual violence against a spouse. “Beyond a domestic crime, it was a real death sentence”: prosecutor Christine De Curraize, whose arguments were followed by the jurors, castigated the attitude of this “violent” man who liked to control .

“Toxic functioning” of the couple

For the defense, Catherine Bresson contested the “regular violence”, highlighting the “toxic functioning” of the couple. “They were both jealous. “He did not let go of responsibility (…) and he put up with a lot of things, like the fact that she went elsewhere and often told him to leave,” she argued.

On January 17, 2022 around 7 p.m., Céline Jardon, 21, was discovered by a friend, lying in the living room of her apartment in the center of Besançon. His companion was found immediately by the police, wandering haggard in the street.

In police custody, he mentions “an argument”, a “fight”, before walling off in silence. During the three days of trial, the man with the imposing build of almost 2 meters and 120 kg explained neither the course nor the motive of the crime, claiming to no longer remember the facts.

A convenient amnesia, according to the lawyer for the civil parties, Randall Schwerdorffer, “which allows him not to say what happened, and in particular the cause of the argument”. “That evening, Céline had to go out with a friend and she was more in the state of mind to separate from him,” adds the council, emphasizing the “possessiveness” of the accused.

According to the autopsy, the young woman, 1.55 meters tall and weighing around forty kilos, was the victim of 18 stab wounds, including 16 in vital areas. Traces of blows to the face, as well as defense injuries were also noted. Me Schwerdorffer denounced “relentlessness”.
