Five people lost their lives last night on a departmental road outside Gaillac in Tarn. The circumstances of the accident remain very unclear at the moment.
A terrible tragedy struck the roads of Tarn this Sunday morning. Around 4:30 a.m., emergency services were called for a road accident on the RD 988, leaving Gaillac, towards Lisle-sur-Tarn. On site, they found a vehicle on fire with four people burned inside. A fifth person, thrown from the car, was in cardiorespiratory arrest. This young man, around twenty years old, has unfortunately died.
A fatal exit from the road
According to initial information, the accident occurred 200 meters from the Piquerouge roundabout, near the parking lot of the L'Ispiens restaurant. The vehicle concerned is a rental Renault Captur which came from Lisle-Sur-Tarn. After the straight line and approaching a slight curve on the left leading to the roundabout, the car would have hit a plane tree on its right. The ejected person was 20 meters from the wreckage.
Why did the car catch fire and who were the victims? It's still too early to tell. Without getting ahead of ourselves, the hypothesis of excessive speed is considered. The events took place on this busy road between Gaillac and Lisle-sur-Tarn. David Amalric, elected “security” referent at the municipality of Gaillac, indicates that there was no traffic at that time, neither vehicle nor pedestrian.
Diversions put in place
Traffic is currently cut off on this axis. Diversions have been put in place. All the services were heavily mobilized: gendarmerie, firefighters, Samu and the Department which therefore immediately diverted the road.
The Tarn department is experiencing a black streak on the roads. Last month, three people died after a head-on collision near Teyssode. The number of road deaths is 27 in 2024.
