Guyana is the 6th French department with the highest rate of domestic violence. Last year she was in the top five. In Guyana, the number of victims is 13.1 women per 1,000 inhabitants aged 15 to 64, in 2023. The figure was 13.9 in 2022. A slight drop out of step with reality, according to an aid association to the victims.

The Ministry of the Interior published the figures for domestic violence in for the year 2023, on November 6. In total, 271,000 victims of violence committed by their partner or ex-partner were recorded in France in 2023. An increase of 10% compared to 2022.

Guyana is the sixth department with the highest rate of domestic violence. She leaves the sad top 5, in which she appeared the previous year. But Guyana still has one of the highest rates in France, behind in particular Pas-de-, the department with the highest rate at 15.2.

In Guyana, 13.1 women aged 15 to 64 per 1,000 inhabitants in the same age group were recorded, by the police or gendarmerie, as victims of domestic violence in 2023.

In 2022, this figure was 13.9 in Guyana. Although it is falling slightly, it is nonetheless alarming. Especially since this drop is not felt by the L'Arbre Fromager association, which supports women victims of domestic violence.

“We still have so many women who come for problems of domestic and domestic violence,” deplores Marion Freney, director of the association.

We even have an increase in 2024, because more women are coming forward, and there are more requests for emergency shelter.

Marion Freney, director of the L’Arbre Formager association

According to Marion Freney, director of the L'Arbre Formager association, all women “are not all ready to start a process and file a complaint, but more and more of them are speaking out and reporting the violence.”

The association also welcomes women who are in “a process of preparing for their exit”. “They come to see us to find out about their rights, what they can claim and what legal steps they can take? explains Marion Freney. They're looking for information.”

The L'Arbre Formager association has an emergency shelter system triggered when women call the SAMU. It can also offer temporary accommodation for four months. “Despite everything, we are not able to accommodate all requests”recognizes Marion Freney.

In 2023, in France, 115 domestic homicides were recorded. If you are a victim or want to help a loved one, the association also recommends the site “let's stop violence 973”.“It is an important source of information whether you are a victim, a witness, a relative of the victim or a professional likely to help the victim escape the violence”concludes Marion Freney.
