Legislative elections 2024: the issues in the 7th constituency of the North (Roubaix west, Croix, Hem, Wasquehal, etc.)

In the 7th constituency of the North (Roubaix-Ouest, Croix, Hem, Wasquehal, Lys-Lez-Lannoy, Leers, Lannoy and Toufflers), there are five declared candidates compared to nine two years ago. The casting has changed little. Four of them were already in the running in 2022 in this very contrasting territory with a varied sociology, with wealthier municipalities like Croix and Wasquehal, and also a small part of Roubaix, with the popular district of Epeule (i.e. in total approximately 110,000 inhabitants). The outgoing MP, Félicie Gérard (Horizons), leaves in duo with the first deputy of the mayor of Hem, Pascal Nys (LR), for an alliance of the right and the center. In 2022, she was elected in the second round with 55.47% of the votes against Karima Chouia.

The “NFP” wants to transform the test

Karima Chouia, under the colors of Nupes, created a surprise two years ago, by eliminating the outgoing MP at the time Valérie Six. Member of EELV, she was elected in opposition to Hem and this time will represent the New Popular Front with the hope of transforming the attempt. On the side of the National Rally, Céline Sayah, departmental youth leader of the RN, received the nomination of Marine Le Pen’s party. She will line up in place of Jean-Sébastien Willem, who also represents himself but with the Reconquest label, this time. Aged 28, Céline Sayah is the “little” news of this election. Finally, Nicolas Schuurman presents itself as in 2022 under the colors of Lutte Ouvrière.

In view of this casting, is the 7th constituency of the North, reputed to be unlosable to the right, likely to swing to the left or to the RN? It would be a Trafalgar move. However, we must handle the figures with caution, but if we add up the number of ballots won in the European elections by the different left-wing lists that make up the “New Popular Front”, we obtain nearly 34% of the votes cast. The RN came first in all the municipalities in the constituency, with the exception of the western districts of Roubaix. Or 26.5% of the votes.

What participation?

To face these two rising forces, Félicie Gérard formed an alliance with LR to save her seat. The list of the presidential majority, led by Valérie Hayer, in fact obtained “only” 16.8% of the European votes and LR, 8.7%. That’s a total of 25.5% between them. Participation will obviously be the unknown factor in this election and could change the situation. For Europeans, only one in two voters went to the polls.
