Sterilization of HUG moved: employees reassured

The concerns of the staff of the Sterilization of the University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG), who must move to a site in Vernier, seem to have vanished. After several months of negotiations, Avenir Syndical and the HUG reached an agreement on the terms of this transfer. “The guarantees desired by the staff have largely been heard,” welcomes the union.

Among these: the guarantee that the project does not ultimately lead to privatization, acceptance of the conditions concerning parking spaces, meals, prices, negotiated schedules in the event of disagreement, solutions for proposals for employment for staff who do not want to move and, finally, the guarantee that no employee will be made redundant. In a press release, Avenir Syndical welcomes “this openness of the HUG to negotiation which, as we see here, remains the best way to resolve situations, including the most complex”.

In May, some staff organized a rally to voice their concerns about the department’s move. The latter has 80 employees. The HUG had indicated that it would have to find new premises, the current ones being no longer suitable, too small, and not bright enough. The site located in the Vernier industrial zone will be twice as spacious, with a surface area of 2,500 m2, specify the HUG. The move, planned for fall 2025, will also free up space for other activities within the main hospital building.
