On Monday June 17, activists from the autonomist and identity party Mossa Palatina deployed a long banner reading “OQTF OUT” on the gates of the Bastia courthouse. This action took place while the trial of a repeat Algerian national, subject to an Obligation to Leave French Territory (OQTF), was underway.

Nicolas Battini Speaks

Nicolas Battini, president of Mossa Palatina and candidate in the legislative elections on June 30 and July 7, spoke in front of the courthouse. He firmly declared: “The entire history of the Isle of Beauty says that the Corsicans are not intended to allow themselves to be plundered, pillaged, stolen and raped. We must protect our island and our people! If we no longer build towers on our coasts as our ancestors did in the 15th century, we can still charter charters and fill them in order to resolve this intolerable situation!“. Accompanied by activists, Battini unfurled another banner on the court gates with the inscription “OQTF TUTTI FORA” (i.e. “OQTF all out”), during the trial of Bilal A., an Algerian national who is a repeat offender.

A Burglary Awakens a Young Woman

During the night of June 12 to 13, several attempted burglaries took place in the Place du Marché district of Bastia. In one of the targeted apartments, a young woman was awakened by noises at the front door. She immediately contacted the police who, arriving quickly on the scene, were able to arrest the burglar. It was a 26-year-old Algerian, a repeat offender and targeted by an OQTF. Several complaints were filed against him for “attempted break-in, damage to private property and burglary.”

Weakly Executed OQTFs

The previous year, the two prefectures of the island issued 570 removal measures: 330 in Haute-Corse and 240 in Corse-du-Sud. However, the referral rate is estimated at only 29% in Haute-Corse and 44% in Corse-du-Sud. Nicolas Battini, denouncing “unbearable laxity in terms of migration policy”, calls for the rapid creation of an administrative detention center with around ten places in Corsica to carry out the OQTF of individuals deemed potentially dangerous.
