More bad news on the employment front. The Bonduelle brand wants to sell off its bagged salad factory based in Saint-Mihiel, in the Meuse. The cause is the drop in consumption and competition from private labels. Negotiations are underway with the “Les Crudettes” brand for the resumption of activity but the 160 employees of the site fear a closure of their factory.
On site, 159 wooden crosses were placed in front of the entrance, each with, a message of despair or anger. “For me, it’s over, there will be nothing,” criticizes Aurélie, a packer employed for ten years at Bonduelle. She does not believe in the brand's desire to find a buyer. “It’s a little story that they tell us to calm people’s minds. It's a sketch, a play. We were lied to about the situation of the company,” she continues.
After the Covid-19 health crisis, the site's 159 employees all saw the drop in production rates linked to the decline in consumption. “Bonduelle was a leader in organic products and without pesticide residue. After Covid and inflation, people no longer used this type of sachet and Bonduelle continued to produce them even though they cost twice as much, which means who gave birth considerable losses“, points out a CFDT delegate. While awaiting their possible dismissal, employees continue to produce 23 tonnes of bagged salads daily.
