Justice has confirmed the expulsion of a 22-year-old former Ivorian apprentice, involved in a fatal accident that occurred in June 2021 in Sables-d'Olonne, in Vendée. The latter had left the scene after a young woman riding an electric scooter was hit by a car. The tragic accident left the victim without help, sending shockwaves through the community.
Journey in France and legal decision
According to 20 Minutes, arriving in France in 2019 at the age of 16, the young man, originally from Ivory Coast, was taken care of by Child Welfare in Vendée. He had trained in the construction sector and worked as an apprentice. In 2022, he was sentenced to six months in prison for failure to assist a person in danger, due to his involvement in the tragedy. The prefect of Vendée then decided not to renew his residence permit, considering him a threat to public order, and notified him of an obligation to leave the territory.
Appeal rejected by the administrative court
The young man's appeal against this decision was rejected in October 2024 by the Nantes administrative court of appeal. The judges ruled that he had no family ties in France and that he could return to Ivory Coast, where his family lives. This decision marks the end of a legal battle which highlighted questions of responsibility and integration of young foreigners in precarious situations on French territory.
