For thirty years, and this year even more, the Smoke relay, in Champagnole, will be there for the sale of head cheese for the benefit of the Telethon.
This edition will be special in many respects: due to the date, set on Saturday November 30, 2024while in previous years the Telethon took place on the first weekend of December, due to this anniversary marking a iron will to liven up the city and to participate in this great sense of solidarityand by the absence of the activities usually organized by the Lions Club, which decided to withdraw after twelve years, for lack of “takers”.
A sale in music
“The bulk of the sale will take place in the morning, from 8:30 a.m.on the sidewalk in front of the Smoke relay“, noted Edwige Javauxthe manager of the delicatessen.
“If there is some merchandise left, the sale will continue in the afternoon inside the store. We are starting with the same quantity of products as last year, i.e. nearly 300 pig heads“. The sales area will be hosted in the morning by the Scratcherswho will come to play guitar and sing.
Solidarity at all levels
All the money raised from the sale will be donated to the Telethon, which represents on average a somme 5 000 €. “Except in 2016 when we collected €11,000 thanks to a head cheese of almost 110 meters the record,” recalls Edwige Javaux.
“This year, we are working with the Comptoir Champagnolais des Viandes(cutting workshop) which supplies us with all the pig heads. They also gave us given pigs' feet and tongueswhich we will cook and exceptionally offer for sale for the benefit of the Telethon.
Thirty years later…
“When my parents started in 1994, they were almost 25 people with the butchers and charcutiers of Champagnole and surrounding areas, and their wives, to ensure the preparation of the cheese, which, even if it is a basic charcuterie product, requires a lot of handling and cooking.
Today there are only four of them (Pierre Javaux, Christian Sauvonnet, Alain Roche and Gérard Saillard) working the pig, supported by the store's saleswomen for the sale,” recalls Edwige Javaux.
“The faces have changed a lot and it is difficult to renewon an animation like this, hence the importance of marking the occasion for this anniversary.”
Other activities for the Telethon
In addition to the sale of head cheese, other activities in support of the Telethon are planned in Champagnole.
On Friday, November 29, the Tarantelle choir will give a concert at 8 p.m. at the Rex hall. Participation from €4.
Saturday November 30, the Champagnole hiking club is organizing a 5 km hike. Departure at 2 p.m. from the town hall square. Minimum contribution of €3.
