  • Federal Councilor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider has decided to leave the X platform (formerly Twitter), which she considers incompatible with the desired debate.

  • Politicians are divided on the use of X, with some denouncing the exploitation of the platform by Elon Musk.

  • Others consider it essential for public debate.

A few sentences and then it goes: “X has changed profoundly. This platform does not correspond to the culture of debate in which I wish to participate. So I decided to leave her. I invite my followers to join me on Instagram!” The words chosen by Federal Councilor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider are clear. On October 31, the socialist announced her departure from the social network X (formerly Twitter). There is no question of continuing to communicate on Elon Musk’s platform, just as controversial as the new American President Donald Trump, whom he supports without reservations. The multi-billionaire is accused of having modified X so that content close to his ideology was favored by the algorithms, and therefore more visible.

Elisabeth Baume-Schneider will perhaps find company among her government colleagues. His socialist comrade Beat Jans let go this Sunday in the Sunday View “have difficulty” supporting X, accusing the social network of “spreading untruths and hatred, and contributing to divisions in society. This is why we are studying communication alternatives with the Federal Chancellery.
