Canada Post letter carriers could be on strike as of this Friday, November 15 at midnight, if no agreement establishing new working conditions is established with the employer by then.
This is what we learned on Tuesday, November 12. In the last few hours, the Union representing the postmen gave a 72-hour strike notice to the management party. It responded with a lockout notice which would begin at 8 a.m. this Friday, at the dawn of Black Friday and the holiday period.
This labor dispute concerns rural and urban Canada Post employees. If the strike or lockout materializes, mail delivery will be affected at the end of the week. Remember that the Employees’ Union and Canada Post have been negotiating to define the terms of a new collective agreement for almost a year now.
In a press release available for consultation on its website, it is specified that the “ New proposals protect and improve what is important to CUPW-represented staff, including providing higher salary increases, while addressing the challenges facing the country’s postal service.»
It also states that “The negotiations come at a critical time for Canada Post, as the Company continues to face significant financial and operational challenges related to delivery in the highly competitive parcel delivery market.” . During the first six months of 2024, Canada Post recorded an operating loss of $490 million. Since 2018, the company has lost more than $3 billion.”
The proposals submitted to the employer by the Union include the following:
– Annual salary increases of 11.5% over four years (compound rate of 11.97%).
– Protection of the defined benefit pension plan for current staff, as well as their job security and benefits.
– Continued salary protection against unforeseen inflation.
– Improved leave rights for current staff.
– Transition to an hourly rate of pay for personnel represented by the RSMC unit.
– Support for the CUPW proposal to merge the RSMC unit and the urban unit.
