Manche: a workshop to reduce energy consumption

Small gestures for big savings. This is the message that Jocelyne Marpaux, of the association Star services. For 12 years, the social mediator has been raising awareness among Cotentin residents about the right actions to adopt in terms of energy consumption. A workshop on this theme was held Tuesday, November 12, at the Rural Family House of Urville-Nacqueville, in La Hague, in partnership with the Cotentin Urban Community.

More and more demand

These workshops are also aimed at audiences in situations energy poverty as to people simply wishing to reduce the amount of their bills. “We will be asked for a lot more advice than before, assure Jocelyne Marpaux, because there are people who feel like they are paying attention and yet see their bills continue to increase.” The fault sometimes, according to the mediator, lies in false good ideas such as wanting to turn off the heating in your home when you are away from home for a few hours. “When you turn the heating back on, it will heat up a lot more because your home will have cooled down.”

Jocelyne Marpaux recommends keeping the heating at 19 degrees in your living room. “Increasing by one degree means increasing your bill by 7%”, she believes. Or tens or even hundreds of euros. Another numerical example: 65 euros. This is the price per year of four electronic devices that remain on standby, such as the television or the game console. Without forgetting that all of this is as good for the wallet as it is for the planet!

Some tips for reducing your energy consumption:

  • Maintain a temperature of 19 degrees in your home
  • Unplug electrical appliances, television, game consoles, power strips, unused smartphone chargers
  • Defrost your freezer or refrigerator
  • Do not put hot dishes in the refrigerator
  • Close the tap as much as possible
  • Five minute showers by turning off the water when soaping
  • Put a lid on your heating pan
