In support of the Graulens fishermen, the senator from Gard sent a letter to the minister.
Questioned by Graulen fishermen and the mayor of Grau du Roi, Denis Bouad, the PS senator from Gard sent a letter to the Minister Delegate in charge of the Sea and Fisheries, last Thursday. The latter aims to alert it to the economic situation of Mediterranean fisheries within the framework of the West Med Plan and current and future negotiations within European bodies.
“Adopted in February 2019, the first West Med plan covering the period 2020-2024, has considerably impacted Graulen fishermen like all Mediterranean fishermen. This notably provided for a reduction in fishing effort of 40% between 2020 and 2024, the exit from the fleet of 14 vessels out of the 57 making up the fleet in the continental Mediterranean, as well as a limitation of fishing days and the establishment of no-fishing zones.
If the protection of fisheries resources is a major issue shared with stakeholders in the sector, it is also important to ensure the economic viability of Mediterranean fisheries. Also, due to the restrictions linked to the first West Med plan, the economic health of these companies has deteriorated significantly in recent years.
Also taking into account the improvement in the state of the resource, it seems important to me that the government adopts a position which will make it possible to preserve this economy within the framework of the ongoing negotiations within the European Union on the follow-up to be given. to the West Med Plan. Knowing that I can count on your support for Mediterranean fishermen, I ask you to accept, Mr. Minister, the expression of my distinguished consideration.” Denis Bouad, PS senator from Gard
