A generalized system? This Friday, November 8, 2024, the Paris Criminal Court found guilty three former employees of the Porte de la Chapelle recycling center. The trio was involved in a corruption affair far from being isolated in the world of waste treatment in the capital.

If two of the defendants were sentenced to two years in prisonthe third was also sentenced to two years in prison, but with six months firm which can be purged under the electronic bracelet regime. The latter is also prohibited from working in the public service for five years. His two companions will be there for three years.

A vast system of corruption

For a long period, the three convicts allegedly allowed private companies to unload their rubble into the recycling center. An illegal practice, because only residents of Paris, Saint-Ouen and Saint-Denis are supposed to be able to access it. The defendants charged based on the volume of the trucks.

According to the investigation carried out by agents of the economic crime repression brigadecorruption would be widespread at all recycling centers. As a result: the number of rubble to manage has exploded in a few years, causing increases in property taxes for the taxpayer. The City of Paris estimated its damage more than 17 million euros.

Simple tips?

During the hearing, the three defendants denied any form of corruption. They had mentioned simple tips left by residents who came to drop off their garbage. Damning video showed two of the employees distribute tickets in the locker room after a day of work. The prosecution had requested a suspended sentence of up to three years in prison.
