In 2021, 43,510 people were diagnosed with diabetes and long-term illness, according to a count from the Finistère diabetics association (AFD 29). A number that tends to increase. “We do not yet have new official figures, but at the end of June, several doctors with whom we spoke affirmed that we had exceeded the mark of 45,000 diabetics in the department,” explains Jean-Claude Ryo, president of AFD 29.
4.64% of the diabetic population in Finistère, 6.07% in France
The association, which organizes between fifteen and twenty diabetes screening operations each year in the department, also points out the prevalence rate of the disease. In Finistère, 4.64% of inhabitants are diabetic. An amount lower than the national average. In France, 6.07% of the population have diabetes.
“It’s a disease that we don’t suffer from, so it’s difficult to spot. But without screening or treatment, there is a big risk of complications,” recalls Jean-Claude Ryo, referring to strokes, heart disease, kidney failure or neuropathies.
