Rangnick complains (a little) about too harsh refereeing

Ralf Rangnick, Austria coach, regretted the refereeing of the Spaniard Jesus Gil Manzano, which he considered too harsh, Monday during the defeat against France (1-0) at Euro 2024.

Nice player but a little annoyed too. Ralf Rangnick, coach of Austria, welcomed the victory of the France team (1-0) against his team on Monday for its entry into the Euro. But he also regretted the too harsh refereeing, according to him, of the Spaniard Jesus Gil Manzano. The latter sanctioned the physical and sometimes brutal play of the Austrians with five warnings, including three for defenders Phillipp Mwene, Maximilian Wöber and Kevin Danso (Christoph Baumgartner and Konrad Laimer also received a yellow). The French concluded the meeting with two yellow cards (Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé).

Austria pushed France to make “an exceptional performance” according to Rangnick

“The game didn’t allow that,” regretted the former coach of Leipzig and Manchester United in particular.

“Even though we were the home team on paper, it certainly wasn’t a local referee.”

Rangnick immediately clarified that he did not want to blame the referee after this meeting. He turns his attention to the next decisive match against Poland. “The focus is on moving forward. We are preparing for Friday and will do everything possible to win the match,” he added.

The German also praised the performance of his team which pushed the Blues to produce an almost perfect copy, according to him. “It worked well – just against one of the best opponents currently on the planet,” he analyzed. “It was not an average performance from the French, but an exceptional performance even by their standards.”

Didier Deschamps also said he heard the final whistle with relief. “That alone shows what an energetic feat it was,” he notes. “They were challenged until the end. Overall, it was the French who had the greatest number of very good chances. This is why the victory is not completely undeserved.”
