Cotentin. Behind the scenes of this hospital’s laundry, an essential but discreet service

Very discretly but nevertheless essentialTHE laundry service of the’hospital of Carentan (Manche) ensures the comfort and thehygiene of all linen in the establishment.

Installed in a building at the entrance to the nursing homethe laundry provides an essential service for the smooth running of the entire establishment, medicine and nursing homes.

Physical work

Five employees are assigned there and brew, every year, 210 tonnes of textiles : terry cloth, bath mats, towels, bathrobe, fitted sheets, all kitchen linen, blankets and duvets, bed linen residentsand the work clothes.

We are completely independent for all our laundry and it is thanks to this service which was completely renovated recently in complete partnership with the employees.

The laundry circuit works like in a restaurant , the dirty enters through a door and absolutely does not communicate with the clean. The barrier is made by washing machine with double opening in height “so you don’t have to bend down when handling the laundry”.

Sorting of dirty laundry is done on tables. “The most difficult thing physically is maneuvering the bags at height a few times,” says Laurence, 35 years of service.

Advances

And to continue: “I experienced sorting laundry on the floor and drying sheets and others on lines in the attic. The evolution is impressive and so important for us physically.”

Another much appreciated advancement: bins with movable bottoms which rise as they are emptied. “We no longer need to break in two to empty them. »

THE washing conditionshave also changed a lot with low temperaturesof the non-aggressive products“because we are very attentive to environmental effects as well as the water consumption », very efficient drying machines.

In addition, we changed all our sheets to non-iron jersey, which allowed us to eliminate the large, noisy steam calender and lower the temperature in the premises. Additionally, these sheets are very comfortable for residents.
