2024 legislative elections: Parity in Guyana, five candidates in each constituency

It’s not really a surprise the limited number of candidates in Guyana’s two constituencies. It must be understood that by dissolving the National Assembly on the evening of June 9, Emmanuel Macron took everyone by surprise, especially since he was defending the opposite a few days before.

This presidential decision was unpredictable, no one was ready. Outside of political parties, established organizations and elected officials, it is difficult for regulars without labels to have the time to turn around and apply.

No surprises in the first constituency, all the expected candidates are there! Jean Victor Castor, outgoing MDES deputy, Boris Chong Sit from Guyana rally, Yvane Goua has no party but a permanent presence on the ground and on all fronts… And that is worth all the parties. She certainly plans to build on her result from the first round in 2020 where she finished in the lead with 20.77% of the votes.

The least known of the candidates is Jean-Yves Mirakoff of Nouvelles forces de Guyane. Little known but member of a party which has weight and means since it is that of Senator Marie-Laure Phinéra-Horth. The other candidate in this constituency is Olivier Taoumi under the label Les Républicains et le Rassemblement national. A man who was very close to Gabriel Serville until recently. Should we see any ideological connection in this candidacy? The campaign will say so.

The first constituency goes from Cayenne to Macouria.

In the second constituency, without it being a surprise, we were not particularly expecting Sophie Charles, mayor of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni and president of the CCOG. No one can prejudge that she can campaign with the means of these two institutions, it is prohibited by law. On the other hand, her obvious knowledge of the land and the people due to her two functions cannot do her any harm.

Aldo Neman presents himself as champion of the Apachi collective which fights for the opening up of Guyana. Is this the fight of all Maroni?
Reading the results of the first round will be interesting in more than one way.

The two 2020 finalists, Davy Rimane, outgoing MP and Jean-Philippe Dolor are ready to do the match again. And then, the last candidate in this constituency is not known to the general public and the media. His name is Sébastien Caugant, he is a teacher and defends the Lutte Ouvrière banner.

The second constituency includes: Approuague-Kaw, Iracoubo, Kourou, Mana, Maripasoula, Matoury, Montsinéry-Tonnegrande, Oyapock.
