the essential
As was to be expected, the candidacy of Jérôme Cahuzac for the 3rd constituency of Lot-et-Garonne divides the unity of left-wing elected officials for a New Popular Front.

On the Gabarre Fuméloise, Thursday afternoon, the scene is quite comical. The political figures of Villeneuvois and Fumélois are all there, seated in the boat which is to take them from the right bank to the left bank of the Lot, to Montayral. The day is “historic” for the territory, with the inauguration of the Fumel dam ferry and therefore the opening to navigation on 130 km of the river. Innovation in the service of tourism, and therefore economic, development in a territory marked by the ravages of deindustrialization. Against all expectations, the atmosphere is not as “joyful” as one might expect, at least that does not reflect the moment. Election requires, the ferry also raises political divisions.

The symbol of this day is on the front of the boat. President Sophie Borderie turns her back on the pair of elected officials from Fumélois, Daniel Borie and Sophie Gargowitsch. The latter will be the replacement candidate for Jérôme Cahuzac in the 3rd constituency of Lot-et-Garonne. “I am only a substitute” repeats the mayor of Blanquefort-sur-Briolance. Daniel Borie supports the candidacy of the former socialist minister. A strong supporter, the mayor of Saint-Vite is a voice that counts in the political landscape of Fumel. Although the president turns from time to time towards the two elected officials, from her majority on the departmental council, let us remember, the smiles and moments of fraternity that we could hope for on a day like this will not come. In the mind of Sophie Borderie, another parameter came to disturb the party.

The Czapla candidacy far from being unanimous

The president of the Department was one of the first to advocate “the union of the left” after the dissolution. In Villeneuve-Fumel, Thomas Bouyssonnie, also departmental councilor of the majority, was on the starting line. Sophie Borderie pleaded for her candidacy. But the games in Paris for the construction of the New Popular Front meant that the 3rd constituency returned to La France Insoumise. Xavier Czapla, candidate in 2022 for Nupes, returns to the fight to unite the left.

Two years ago, he had great difficulty rallying the tenors of the left of Villeneuvois and Fumélois to his cause. With the candidacy of Jérôme Cahuzac, things look even more difficult. The historical figures, like Marcel Calmette – another departmental elected official from the Borderie majority – lean towards mobilization for the former deputy mayor of Villeneuve. Voices were raised to bring about union, like that of Thomas Bouyssonnie, excluded but militant of the union, and those of Annie Messina or Yvon Ventadoux. The campaign launch meeting for candidate Czapla will take place this Monday evening in Villeneuve. L’Insoumis will be able to get an idea of the amount of support from local elected officials for this New Popular Front.
