Departing from Les Sables-d'Olonne in November 2020, two high-level skippers were preparing to experience a unique adventure of its kind. Now separated, Romain Attanasio, then aged 43, and Samantha Davies, 46, became the first couple to participate simultaneously in this event nicknamed “the Everest of the seas”, an extreme race which crosses all the major oceans of the planet over some 44,460 kilometers.
An experienced sailor with multiple exploits
Born in Paris and originally from Hautes-Alpes, Romain Attanasio discovered his passion for navigation thanks to his uncle in Port Navalo, in Morbihan. After a promising start in dinghy sailing and advanced training at the sports-studies section of La Baule, he gained solid experience by participating in around ten Solitaires du Figaro alongside renowned skippers. His career took a decisive turning point with his first participation in the Vendée Globe in 2016-2017, which he finished in 15th place after 110 days at sea. A competitor at heart, this first positive experience encouraged him to continue the adventure . He acquired a more efficient sailboat and went on to compete in prestigious competitions: Transat Jacques Vabre, Route du Rhum, then his second Vendée Globe in 2020-2021 which he finished in 14th place, 20 days ahead of his previous performance.
