It is even larger than the Paris Digital Park, already nicknamed “the largest data center in France” and which is currently under construction in La Courneuve in Seine-Saint-Denis. The American group Digital Realty is planning a 200 megawatt campus in Dugny, far surpassing the Paris Digital Park which will only have 130 megawatts. It is not a question of beating a competitor since it is the same group which is at the origin of the two projects, the American having bought the European group Interxion, at the origin of the La Courneuve center.
Responding to the rise of AI
The aim is to respond to the increase in digital data consumption and the rise of technologies such as artificial intelligence. The choice of the department of Seine-Saint-Denis can be explained for different reasons, as Cécile Diguet, urban planner at the Ile-de-France Institute of Planning and Urban Planning, had already indicated to us in 2022. These are formerly industrial areas, which have a significant electricity supply and large plots of land at affordable prices. “Internet networks often run along highways and railways. In this case, the centers benefited from the proximity of the A1 motorway along the Saint-Denis plain. They also tend to concentrate on facilitating the exchange of data,” explained the specialist.
In Dugny, Digital Realty plans to settle on former military land on the edge of Le Bourget airport.
In La Courneuve, the last segment of the Paris Digital Park will be delivered at the beginning of 2025. In Dugny, Digital Realty plans to settle on ten hectares of former military land, on the edge of Le Bourget airport. Three data centers, containing 30 computer rooms, are planned over an area of 41,000 m². It is planned to put them into service in phases between 2025 and 2030. The public inquiry into this project ends on November 15.
